Generative AI has had a major impact on the academic landscape since the emergence of ChatGPT in November 2022. Yet much of the ethical discourse has centred on the use of these technologies from the student perspective. We instead present an overview of our project that explored the privacy risks, ethical dilemmas, and legal challenges involved in research, specifically when participant data is fed into text-based Generative AI technologies as prompts. We also introduce a tool to support researchers in using such technologies in an informed and responsible manner.
