Dr. Ali Farooq is a lecturer in Human Factors in Cybersecurity at University of Strathclyde. He is Co-PI on REPHRAIN project grant “Addressing Privacy Risks and Legal Challenges in the Emergent Use of Text-based Generative AI for UK Research”. He is also a senior research consultant at Qatar Computing Research Institute where he is spearheading a Facebook/META-funded project on social media privacy concerns in MENA region – a large scale multi-country study investigating social media privacy concerns in the Middle East and North African countries.
His research focus is “Where human meets technology”. He uses knowledge from disciplines such as sociology, psychology, and economics to understand how people interact with technology, what issues they face, and the consequences of technology use, with a special focus on security and privacy. Improving the learning and engagement of future cybersecurity professionals and investigating the effects of the dark side of technology, such as information overload and technostress, on general and security-related behaviours also interest him. He has expertise in both quantitative and qualitative research.
His research has appeared in several impact journals such as Information Processing & Management, Information Technology & People, Technology in Society, Telematics & Informatics, Journal of Medical Internet Research, and Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services.
